He rang on a Tuesday and hung up before I finished the second sentence.<\/p>\n

That happens more than people think. Nobody minds it and nobody makes a note of it, but you
\ndo remember the ones who ring back, and he rang back on the Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Second Call<\/h2>\n

Six minutes that time, and he spent all six of them explaining that he was asking for a
\nfriend. Not in those words. Men have better cover stories than that now. His was that he was
\ncurious about how it all worked, in general, out of interest, because somebody had mentioned it.<\/p>\n

I let him have it. There is no advantage in taking that away from a man in his first ten
\nminutes and there is every advantage in letting him keep it as long as he needs.<\/p>\n

Then he asked, very casually, whether the women on the line ever told men what to do. And I
\nsaid yes, constantly, that is the entire service. And he went quiet and said he should probably
\ngo, and went.<\/p>\n

The Third Call<\/h2>\n

Nearly two weeks later, which is about average.<\/p>\n

He got as far as saying his name, which he had not done before, and then there was one of
\nthose pauses where you can hear a man deciding whether to keep lying. Long one. Fifteen seconds,
\nmaybe.<\/p>\n

I did not fill it. That is the only skill this job really requires and it took me years to
\nlearn it. Every instinct tells you to rescue somebody in a silence that long, and rescuing him is
\nthe one thing that would have ended the call.<\/p>\n

What he said, eventually, was that he had been thinking about this since he was about sixteen
\nand had never said it to anybody.<\/p>\n

What He Actually Wanted<\/h2>\n

Almost nothing, is the honest answer, and that is the part men would not believe.<\/p>\n

He did not want to be hurt. He did not want to be shouted at. He wanted to be told to do
\nsmall, dull, specific things by somebody who was not going to check whether he minded. Stand up.
\nPut the phone in the other hand. Do not speak until I ask you something.<\/p>\n

That was the whole first proper session. Twenty minutes of the most ordinary instructions you
\ncould imagine, delivered flatly, and by the end of it his voice had changed completely. Not
\nexcited. Steadier. Like something had been put down.<\/p>\n

Men arrive expecting a performance, and what actually works is the opposite of a performance.

Every woman on this line will tell you the same. The calls that land are the quiet ones. The

The Bit Men Get Wrong Before Ringing<\/h2>\n

He had spent, by his own account, several years working out exactly what he was going to say
\nbefore he rang. Then he rang and could not say any of it, three times.<\/p>\n

Nobody needs a script. The women here have had this conversation several thousand times
\nbetween them and every one of them can carry it from a standing start. You genuinely can ring
\nwith nothing prepared and be talked through it, and that is usually the better call because
\nnobody is steering.<\/p>\n

If you have a plan, fine. But the plan is not the entry fee, and men who think it is spend
\nyears not ringing.<\/p>\n

He Still Rings<\/h2>\n

Every couple of weeks, for about three years now. Twenty minutes, usually a Wednesday.<\/p>\n

He does not do anything elaborate. There is no scene and no costume and nothing that would
\nsound interesting written down. He gets told what to do by somebody who is not going to negotiate
\nabout it, for twenty minutes, and then he goes back to a life where he is apparently in charge of
\nquite a lot of people.<\/p>\n

That is what most of this actually is. Not the photographs on the front of the site. Twenty
\nquiet minutes on a Wednesday.<\/p>\n

If You Have Hung Up Before<\/h2>\n

Then you are in good company and it is not held against you. It happens several times a week
\non this line and nobody sitting on the other end thinks anything of it beyond hoping you ring
\nback.<\/p>\n

When you do, you can skip the friend. Say it is your first call, or your fourth attempt at a
\nfirst call, and let her take it from there. The
\nthree of them<\/a> are all used to it and none of them will make it a moment.<\/p>\n

Twenty minutes is the right length. The
\nrates page<\/a> has everything written out, and you do not need to know what you want before you
\ndial.<\/p>\n

Why I Did Not Fill The Silence<\/h2>\n

It is the hardest habit in this job to learn and the one that matters most.<\/p>\n

Every instinct you have with another person is to rescue them from an awkward pause. You have
\nspent your whole life doing it. And on this line it is precisely the wrong move, because the
\npause is where a man decides whether to say the true thing, and if you fill it for him he takes
\nthe exit you just handed him.<\/p>\n

New women on any line fill silences. It takes a year or two before you can sit in fifteen
\nseconds of nothing without helping, and it is the single skill that separates a call somebody
\nremembers from one they do not.<\/p>\n

What He Would Have Got From A Ten Minute Call<\/h2>\n

Nothing, is the honest answer, and it is worth saying because ten minutes is what most first
\ntime callers book.<\/p>\n

Ten minutes would have been the cover story and the goodbye. There would have been no room for
\nthe pause, and without the pause there is nothing. He booked twenty on that third call and the
\nuseful part did not begin until about minute thirteen.<\/p>\n

That is not a sales line, it is arithmetic. If it takes most men twelve minutes to stop
\nperforming, a ten minute call is a call that ends just before it starts.<\/p>\n

The Version Of This I Hear Every Week<\/h2>\n

His story is not unusual and that is the whole reason it is written down here.<\/p>\n

Men who have carried something since they were teenagers, who have rehearsed a first call for
\nyears, who then ring and cannot get a word out. Men who hang up. Men who ring back weeks later
\nand try again. It happens on this line several times a week and nobody on this end thinks
\nanything of it except hoping they try again.<\/p>\n
